When Lining Is the Right Answer
Wondering when to reline a drain rather than dig it up? Lining is shortlisted whenever the pipe is still continuous, meaning the camera can travel the full run and the structure is damaged but not destroyed. Four scenarios come up again and again.
Cracks and minor displacement
Where the pipe has cracked or joints have shifted slightly but the run is still intact, a liner seals and strengthens the whole section in one visit. On the WRc grading scale used in survey reports, this is typically damage graded 2 to 4.
Root intrusion, once the roots are cut
Tree roots find their way in through joints and cracks, and simply cutting them out invites them straight back. The effective fix is mechanical root cutting first, followed by a liner that permanently seals the entry point.
Pitch fibre deformation
Pitch fibre pipework, common in homes built between the 1950s and 1970s, softens and deforms over time. Re-rounding followed by lining restores the circular shape and gives the pipe a structural second life without digging up the garden.
Where access is difficult

Lining is not a universal cure. Excavation remains the right call when:
- The pipe has suffered a severe collapse and the camera cannot pass through. Collapsed drains with no continuity cannot accept a liner.

- Multiple fractures sit across a short span, leaving too little sound pipe to line.
- The pipe needs replacing at a larger capacity, for example to serve a new extension.
